Workshops for Individuals

Suitable for parents/carers, education, health and social care professionals (including students training to be education,  health and social care professionals), as well as staff working in the retail, leisure, hospitality and tourism sectors.

LEVEL 1

​

The Level 1 Workshop is the starting point for learning Makaton and is suitable for everyone. It provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and covers commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use, as well as how to start using Makaton in everyday situations.

 

It includes the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2 of the Core Vocabulary and part of the Additional Stage.

​

It is available as an online workshop across three evening sessions.

 

Participants receive a Manual and a Certificate of Attendance.

LEVEL 2

​

Please note - you have to have completed Level 1 before doing Level 2. 

​

The Level 2 Workshop builds on the knowledge gained in Level 1 training. It provides more information about the Makaton Language Programme and covers research support for Makaton use as well as ideas for teaching Makaton.

 

It includes the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4 of the Core Vocabulary and the rest of the Additional Vocabulary.

It is available as an online workshop across three evenings.

 

Participants receive a Manual  and a Certificate of Attendance. 

LEVEL 3

 

Please note - you have to have completed Levels 1 & 2 before doing Level 3.

The Level 3 Workshop helps improve and develop your signing and symbol skills.  It provides an introduction to interpretation and translation and covers hints and tips for improving your accuracy and fluency.

 

It includes revision of the signs and symbols from Levels 1 and 2, as well as the signs and symbols from Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary.

It is available as an online workshop across three evening sessions.

​

Participants receive a Manual and a Certificate of Attendance.

LEVEL 4

 

Please note - you have to complete Levels 1, 2 & 3 before doing Level 4.

The Level 4 Workshop further develops and extends your signing and symbol skills.  It provides more information about interpretation and translation and covers adapting Makaton to ensure an inclusive approach.

 

It includes revision of the signs and symbols from Levels 1, 2 and 3, as well as the signs and symbols from Stages 7 and 8 of the Core Vocabulary. This completes the Core Vocabulary.

It is available as an online workshop across three evening sessions.

​

Participants receive a Manual and a Certificate of Attendance.

REFRESHER SESSIONS FOR LEVELS 1 TO 4

 

 

Please note - you have to have completed Levels 1 and 2 with me online or in person to attend the Refresher Session for Levels 1 and 2 AND/OR Levels 3 and 4 with me online or in person to attend the Refresher Session for Levels 3 and 4.

​

Refresher sessions revise signs and symbols from EITHER the Levels 1 and 2 Workshops AND/OR the Levels 3 and 4 Workshops.

​

Each Refresher Session is delivered online in a single 2 hour session. 

Training for your workplace

Suitable for all workplaces and teams were staff interact with Makaton users of all ages and abilities.

​

I provide training in your workplace on a day and at a time to suit your team, including weekdays, evenings and weekends.

Workshop prices - as at August 2023;

Taster Sessions £125 for the session up to max of 15 people

Levels 1 to 4 POA up to a max of 15 people per level

Refresher Sessions £150 for the session up to a max of 15 people

Using Makaton with Singing and Watch my Needs workshops POA

A Makaton Taster Session is a 90min fun, interactive and informal session. It is designed to raise awareness of Makaton in your workplace, help your team understand what Makaton is, who uses it, and how it can be helpful in your workplace. It also gives you an opportunity to consider what other Makaton training is appropriate for your team and workplace.

 

It includes 34 signs and symbols from the Core Vocabulary, and a further 12 signs and symbols which can be tailored to the specific needs of your workplace.

​

Workplaces receive electronic copies of handouts covering all the signs and symbols included in the Taster Session, and an electronic Certificate of Attendance.

​

Taster Sessions are a cost effective way of introducing Makaton to your workplace. 

All of the Level Workshops, as well as Refresher Sessions, can be delivered online or in person at your setting or workplace on dates/times to suit your team.

​

I offer half day or day rates for Level Workshops in settings and workplaces. This significantly reduces the cost per person and is an economical way of providing Makaton training for a team.

Using Makaton with Singing

The Using Makaton with Singing workshop is a fun, interactive session aimed at Early Years and Primary settings, as well as community music projects. 

 

Signing and singing have been shown to encourage the development of communication and language skills and are beneficial for vocalisation, confidence, social skills, emotional development, well-being and self-esteem.

​

It provides background information to the Makaton Language Programme, hints and tips for effective signing in songs and developing signing skills through songs, as well as how to use Makaton with music in your setting.

​

It is delivered in person or online as a half day session. 

​

It includes signs used in 10 popular children's songs. 

​

Participants receive a Manual and a Certificate of Attendance.

Watch my Needs

The Watch my Needs workshop is designed for adults who are experiencing communication and memory difficulties as a result of dementia, and their supporters.

 

It is delivered in person in 5 weekly sessions of 90 minutes each, which includes time for refreshments and conversation with other participants.

​

It provides background information to the Makaton Language Programme and hints and tips for using signs and symbols for basic, functional communication for everyday living.

​

It includes signs and symbols for greetings, food and drink, feelings, self-care and well-being and activities.

​

Participants receive a Manual and a Certificate of Attendance.
